Rep. Brad Miller Helps Secure Funding for Law Enforcement, Gang Prevention, Job Creation, Healthcare and Education in the Triang

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Brad Miller (NC-13) announced today that he was able to help secure funding for the Triangle area in the FY09 Consolidated Appropriations Act which passed in the House to wrap up work on the fiscal 2009 appropriations bill. The bill now goes to the Senate, then to the President for his signature.

"This funding is a shot in the arm to help vital programs in our communities during a tough economy including gang prevention, increased access to healthcare, infrastructure improvements and innovation for job creation," said Rep. Miller.

Rep. Miller secured funding for the following Triangle projects included in the 2009 Appropriations Bill:

Wake County Gang Prevention Partnership - $650,000 to strengthen existing youth gang prevention and after-school training programs through a public education outreach project.

Cary Police Department Technology Upgrades - $300,000 to equip all police department enforcement vehicles with digital video camera systems.

Wake Health Services - $238,000 to allow Wake Health Services, Inc., a community health center, to implement an electronic records system.

St. Augustine Health Disparities Institute - $285,000 to create a health institute on the site of the historic St. Agnes Hospital.

City of Raleigh Bus Replacement and Expansion - $950,000 to purchase replacement transit buses as part of the city's five-year transit expansion.

Cary Watershed Protection and Stream Bank Restoration Program - $199,000 to mitigate the effects of agriculture run-off and improve water quality.

North Carolina Biotechnology Center - $95,000 for collaboration between the Biotech Center and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to develop and implement biotech-related science curriculum materials; $294,772 to promote the development of successful biotechnology company managers by providing training to academic researchers and novice entrepreneurs in small business skills.

North Carolina State University Projects - $2,780,908 to fund research projects on alternative energy; food and water safety; and agriculture.

Rep. Miller also supported the following projects included in the 2009 Appropriations Bill:

National Textile Center at North Carolina State University - $1,000,000 for the center which provides the textile industry with a knowledge-based competitive edge.

Wake County Community Based Health Care Facility - $400,000 to provide a permanent continuum of psychiatric and mental health care for the residents of Wake County.

City of Raleigh Capital Area Transit Maintenance Facility - $1.425 million to fund site selection and construction of a transit maintenance facility.

U.S. 401 Franklin and Wake Counties - $237,500 to fund the widening of US 401 to multiple lanes to help a rapidly developing area while aiding economic development in the region.
